Revenge
Miejski Dom Kultury "Prażakówka", Ustroń, Poland
"Revenge" by Aleksander Fredro - alongside "Maidens' Vows", his most celebrated comedy - has lived in the consciousness of Polish generations for nearly 200 years. Critics wrote that it was like a "polonaise played in the sound of words", and all agreed on one thing: it is Fredro's most Polish comedy.
A neighbourly dispute between a Chamberlain and a Lawyer becomes the foundation for exposing human flaws and mocking pettiness, while also reminding us that in the end, reconciliation will restore what hatred has destroyed. There is no shortage of romantic intrigue, the scheming of the ridiculous Papkin, and the appetizing Podstolina. The castle itself is a character in its own right - a motif from a pre-Romantic Gothic novel, whose genesis traces back to Horace Walpole's "The Castle of Otranto" from 1764.
The Polish Classics Theatre production, directed by Michał Chorosiński, remains faithful to the letter of the text and respectful of the word. Duration: 1h 30′.
