RESPIGHI - MOZART
Polish Radio Concert Studio named after Witold Lutosławski in Warsaw, Poland
The concert is organized by the Polish Royal Opera.
The first part of the evening will feature music by Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936). The suite Gli uccelli (1928) for small orchestra consists of five miniatures inspired by early harpsichord music: each piece is based on a work from the 17th or 18th century - the Prelude and the Cuckoo by Bernardo Pasquini that closes the cycle, the Dove by Jacques de Gallot, the Hen by Jean-Philippe Rameau, and an anonymous Nightingale. The cantata Il tramonto (Twilight) from 1914 brings a completely different mood: it is a sorrowful tale of lost love, woven from the romantic poetry of Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822), with the vocal line sung by a mezzo-soprano.
The second part of the concert will feature Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Symphony in D major KV 504 from 1786, first performed in Prague in January of the following year - hence its nickname "Prague". The three-movement form follows Italian tradition, with clear structure and restrained expression.
