Dire Straits were a British rock band formed in London in 1977 by guitarist and vocalist Mark Knopfler, his brother David Knopfler, bassist John Illsley, and drummer Pick Withers. Their sound - rooted in blues, folk and country, built around Mark Knopfler's distinctive fingerpicking style - stood apart from the punk era they emerged from. The band disbanded in 1995 after six studio albums and worldwide sales exceeding 120 million records; their 1985 album Brothers in Arms alone sold over 30 million copies and was the first album in history to sell a million copies on CD. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
Brothers in Arms was reissued on 16 May 2025 in a 40th anniversary edition - available as a 5-LP box set, triple CD and Blu-ray - including a previously unreleased full-length live concert from San Antonio, August 1985.
Mark Knopfler released One Deep River on 12 April 2024, his tenth solo album and first since 2018, recorded at British Grove Studios in London.
Mark Knopfler confirmed in April 2024 that he would never perform again as part of Dire Straits, ruling out any reunion.
Dire Straits were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
