About

Jacques Brel (1929-1978) was a Belgian singer-songwriter and actor, born in Schaerbeek, Brussels, who became one of the defining voices of 20th-century French-language chanson. His theatrical stage presence and emotionally raw lyrics - ranging from love and longing to satire and mortality - earned him a devoted following first in Belgium and France, then worldwide. Songs such as "Ne me quitte pas" and "Amsterdam" were translated into dozens of languages and covered by artists from Frank Sinatra to David Bowie. He sold over 25 million records globally and remains the third-best-selling Belgian recording artist of all time.
