Karat is a German rock band founded in 1975 in East Berlin, emerging from the jazz-rock group Panta Rhei. Known for melodic progressive rock with prominent keyboards and orchestral arrangements, they became one of the few GDR bands to chart in West Germany before the fall of the Wall - their 1982 album "Der blaue Planet" was a top seller on both sides of the border. Since 2005, Claudius Dreilich - son of longtime frontman Herbert Dreilich, who died in 2004 - has led the band, which continues to tour and release new material after more than 50 years.
