Krzysztof Penderecki (1933–2020) was a Polish composer and conductor, one of the most significant figures in 20th- and 21st-century classical music. He gained international recognition with avant-garde works such as Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima, and later embraced a neoromantic style. His Polish Requiem is among the major achievements of his sacred output.
