The hunchback who removed his two underage nephews from the path to secure the throne. The one who cried out in the final battle: "A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse!" Shakespeare's Richard III is a story of absolute evil - and such stories hold a timeless, macabre fascination.

In Helena Scheuba's adaptation, however, this image of a monster is dismantled. She lays bare the various facets of the character and poses uncomfortable questions: How does one become a monster? Does the potential for it lurk in all of us? Can one even understand a monster or feel pity for it? Richard's strategies of power appear logical, comprehensible - and in their own way, fascinating. Six actors embodying seventeen characters expose Richard's motives, sometimes rendering them absurd - all with honesty and considerable wit.
