Emigrant Songs - Nastya Dzyuban, Olen Mamai, Hanna Launikovich, Andrii Punko
Frankfurt LAB, Germany
Polissia / Palesse is a border region between Ukraine and Belarus where, despite attempts at imperial erasure, shared cultural and linguistic traditions connect Ukrainians and Belarusians. In "Emigrant Songs", four performers gather fragments of these traditions and weave their voices into a living, breathing archive.
At the heart of the piece lies a camouflage net - a mesh of fabric and stories, of (in)visibility and protection amid ongoing war. On stage, threads are knotted, hands work rhythmically, voices rise, heels begin to stamp.
How much does one adapt to stay safe? Cultural camouflage becomes an attempt to fit into new social structures - blurring one's own contours, concealing presence, disappearing into the background. Migration emerges as a constant dance between the desire to be heard and the necessity to merge with the social landscape. Between weaving and singing, hiding and revealing, the performers follow fragile paths to remain visible - searching for the place they come from and the place where their voices find resonance.
