METROPOLIS (1927) is Fritz Lang's monumental silent film, an expressionist masterpiece about a futuristic city with a sharply divided class system. It was one of the most expensive films of its era and is considered one of the most significant works in cinema history. The film comes from the collection of the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung (www.murnau-stiftung.de) in Wiesbaden, which has preserved and made accessible valuable German film heritage since 1966. The foundation was also responsible for the internationally acclaimed restoration, made possible by a discovery in Buenos Aires, which recovered nearly the complete original version.
