Dire Straits were a band of superlatives. With Mark Knopfler's distinctive guitar playing and his deep voice instantly recognizable, they rose from small bar concerts to the world's biggest stages in less than a decade.
As a counterpoint to the punk-rock that dominated the era, the always modest musicians of Dire Straits (a name meaning "difficult situation") initially occupied a niche space, until in record time they became one of the most famous and successful bands in music history, selling over 120 million records.
Their breakthrough came in the late 1970s with "Sultans of Swing," which established Mark Knopfler as a singer, songwriter, and above all guitarist. The band reached peak popularity in the mid-1980s with "Money For Nothing," a collaboration with Sting.
But success and enormous pressure took too high a toll on the musicians. After the success of their final album "On Every Street" (38 times platinum worldwide) and their world tour of 1991-1992 with 229 concerts in total, Mark Knopfler announced in 1995 that the band would be inactive and would no longer perform public concerts.
This final phase is now, 30 years later, the focus of the tribute show "One Night of Dire Straits." Guitarist and vocalist Alex Moll, together with his expertly assembled band of studio and touring musicians, takes audiences on a journey filled with captivating, handcrafted music.
Moll has studied Knopfler's music and guitar playing since his youth and gathers in his band exclusively fellow musicians who have Dire Straits in their blood as much as he does. Moll succeeds not only in drawing from his guitar the same sounds that made Mark Knopfler world-famous, but also in bringing the energy and joy of playing of his nine-member band to the level of the original.
