Danceperados of Ireland - Spirit of Irish Christmas — Stadthalle Ahaus, Ahaus

Every country has its own special way of celebrating Christmas. Ireland is no exception. Danceperados of Ireland bring us closer to Irish Christmas traditions through their "Irish Christmas Show". They immerse us in the world of unique customs of the Green Island, such as the "Wren Boys" tradition - young men blacken their faces, don strange straw hats and dress in rags. They go from house to house, singing special songs and collecting gifts. In ancient times they were accompanied by a captured wren - a bird considered an ally of the devil. These Irish traditions reach back to pre-Christian times.

Danceperados transport us to an era before the commercialization of Christmas and the ubiquitous Santa Claus. English colonial authorities once banned Catholic mass and especially singing in Irish, accompanied by Irish folk melodies. During the "Irish Christmas Show", ancient hymns in the Irish language will resound - songs traditionally sung at Christmas. They will be joined by English Christmas carols, such as the world-famous "Wexford Carol".

For many Irish people, both in the past and today, Christmas is the only opportunity to return home. They work abroad all year, so these holidays are a time of joyful reunions with family and friends. Pubs overflow with people, whiskey and beer flow freely, and to the sounds of Jigs & Reels everyone dances with passion. An Irish step-dancing show with the motto "Irish Christmas" is the perfect blend of tradition, music and dance.
