Oscar Wilde's first work of prose fiction, The Canterville Ghost, opens squarely in the tradition of the romantic ghost story: a wealthy American family buys an English country estate, complete with a ghost who takes his haunting duties very seriously. Wilde then flips the script: the new owners show no fear whatsoever, and they thwart the ghost's every attempt to frighten them until he gives up entirely and starts to dread the family instead.

Actor Matthias Matschke brings Wilde's characters to life with effortless wit and irony, while musician Stefan Weinzierl weaves an eerily beautiful soundscape around the story.

Whether or not you believe in the supernatural, Wilde's send-up of Victorian attitudes and the rise of New World capitalism is as funny as it is touching.
