Young sculptor Brindsley Miller dreams of a great artistic career. On a Sunday evening, he prepares his apartment with his fiancée for a visit from the wealthy art patron Godunov. He wants to impress both him and his future father-in-law by swapping his shabby furniture for the exquisite antiques of his temporarily absent neighbour Harold - of course without his knowledge.

When the power suddenly goes out, panic ensues. There are no candles or matches to be found, the electrician is late, and neighbour Harold unexpectedly returns early from his trip. When Miss Furnival, the hard-drinking neighbour, and Brindsley's ex-girlfriend Clea also appear, chaos inevitably unfolds...
