Schumann's most ambitious work, the secular oratorio "Das Paradies und die Peri", traces a story of remorse, redemption and longing for lost happiness. Drawing on Thomas Moore's celebrated collection of tales, it follows the Peri - a fallen angel cast out from paradise - as she embarks on a passionate journey through distant lands in search of a way back.
The MDR-Rundfunkchor and a distinguished cast of vocal soloists conjure an exotic soundscape in which the oriental tale unfolds in vivid colour.
