Veronika Eberle (Violin) — Kornhaus, Ulm

In Dialogue with Mendelssohn

In 1831, Fanny Hensel revives a tradition she once shared with Felix: the so-called Sonntagsmusiken - private concerts held every other Sunday in the Mendelssohn family's spacious residence. In 1834, her Overture in C Major receives its world premiere here. As conductor, she personally leads the orchestra, baton in hand - an instrument invented just ten years before.

More than a decade later, her brother's Violin Concerto in E Minor is heard for the first time in Leipzig. Felix carried this work in his heart and mind for six years before completing it - he wanted to dedicate it to his friend, violinist Ferdinand David. Today it is hard to imagine the effort it cost him. The piece surprises with its economy of harmonic means and an almost Mozartian delicacy of orchestration - the composer revives the spirit of classicism. The concert concludes with Ferdinand Ries's Symphony No. 1 in D Major, a contemporary of Beethoven whose music is unjustly rarely performed today. His compositions impress with energy, wit, and melodic invention.

Veronika Eberle takes the solo part in this work, a musician well-known to concert audiences. Her extraordinary talent and artistic maturity are valued by some of the world's finest orchestras, concert halls, and festivals, as well as by leading conductors.
