Mein BlindDate mit dem Leben - a stage play based on the book by Saliya Kahawatte — Stadthalle Betzdorf, Betzdorf

"My favourite route runs along the Außenalster. The wind tells me what the Alster looks like."

At 15, Saliya Kahawatte - German-born of Sinhalese descent - loses almost all of his sight. Doctors tell him he will soon go completely blind. He is expected to leave school and work in a workshop for the visually impaired. But Saliya wants to finish his Abitur, go to university, and live life on his own terms. And he pulls it off: he conceals his condition and lands a training position in the hospitality industry. Against all odds, with the help of a small circle of trusted colleagues, he navigates the challenges and spends 15 years passing as sighted. Fingertips, ears, and instinct take the place of his eyes. Then one day he has to admit that his world consists of little more than shadows - but Saliya refuses to give up.

A moving, uplifting, and often funny story drawn from real life. In 2017, Marc Rothemund adapted it for the cinema.
