Philippe Lefebvre (Paris/F) | organ

Philippe Lefebvre began his career as an organist in Marcq-en-Baroeul. On the recommendation of Pierre Cochereau, he studied from the age of 16 at the Conservatoire de Lille and later at the Conservatoire national superieur de musique et de danse de Paris, focusing on organ, improvisation and composition.

At 19 he was appointed titular organist of Arras Cathedral; a few months later Lefebvre gave his first concert at Notre-Dame de Paris.

In 1971 he won first prizes in organ performance and improvisation at the Paris Conservatoire, and later first prizes in counterpoint and fugue. In 1972 he received the "Prix de la Fondation de la Vocation", the first prize in improvisation at the international organ competition in Lyon, and the grand prize in improvisation at the international organ competition in Chartres.

In 1976 he was appointed titular organist of Chartres Cathedral.

From 1985 to 2024, Philippe Lefebvre served as titular organist of Notre-Dame de Paris and was the principal person responsible for sacred music there.

From 1980 to 2003 he was director of the Conservatoire de Lille. Since 2002 he has taught organ improvisation at the Conservatoire de Paris.
