Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas Oratorio is one of the most popular works in the history of church music.
As a six-part oratorio for soloists, mixed choir, and orchestra, the individual parts were first performed by the Thomanerchor in Leipzig during six services between Christmas Day 1734 and Epiphany 1735 in the Nikolaikirche and Thomaskirche. The work is characterized by festive opening and closing choruses, musical settings of the New Testament Christmas story in recitatives, simple Christmas chorales, and elaborate arias. The six individual cantatas are united by the joy of Christ's birth.
What makes this performance special is the collaborative music-making in the form of SINGALONG, a kind of "participatory concert".
