Vienna in a single morning: the Klenze Streichquartett - a fixture for over 15 years, drawn from members of the Bavarian State Orchestra - serves up "Wiener Melange" as an elegant blend of classical grace, dry wit and dancing passion. Mozart's Divertimento in D major KV 136 ("Salzburger Sinfonie Nr. 1") and the immortal "Eine kleine Nachtmusik" open the doors: light, luminous, with noble clarity. Then things get spicy and colourful: Kreisler's "Kleiner Wiener Marsch" and the twin pieces "Liebesleid/Liebesfreud" shimmer with nostalgia and elegance. Piazzolla's "Oblivion" and Mariano Morés's "Cafetín de Buenos Aires" carry the Viennese pulse into tango territory - melancholic and sweeping at once. Shostakovich's Polka and Hindemith's wry "Mistfinken" add pointed flourishes before Johann Schrammel's "Wien bleibt Wien" brings the programme to a spirited close. A morning of contrasts, colour and spark - chamber music at its most focused, with an unmistakable Viennese flair.
