Shakespeare's Macbeth

For Katharina Thalbach, this marks a return to her roots: Macbeth was her first directorial work - celebrated across Europe, triumphantly received in London, and presented as a model production at the Théâtre national de Chaillot in Paris for nine years. Now she returns to this work - this time as a reading, playing Macbeth herself, in Thomas Brasch's translation.

Together with her daughter Anna and granddaughter Nellie, she explores Shakespeare's most famous tragedy - known in England simply as "the play", because speaking its title brings misfortune. Alongside Lady Macbeth, mysterious witches inhabit the stage, and at the end a walking forest determines fate - Shakespeare's celebrated dramaturgical coup. In distributed roles, a reading unfolds about power, guilt, and destiny, carried by the intergenerational interplay of three actresses from one family.

Katharina Thalbach has been on stage since childhood and ranks among the most renowned German-language film and television actresses. She has received, among other honours, the German Film Prize, the Grimme Prize, and in 2014 the German Audiobook Prize for her lifetime achievement.

Her daughter Anna is a theatre and film actress and one of Germany's most sought-after audiobook narrators (German Audiobook Prize 2008). In cinema, she has appeared in "Der Baader Meinhof Komplex" and in David Cronenberg's "A dangerous method" (2010) alongside Keira Knightley and Viggo Mortensen. Granddaughter Nellie Thalbach, born in Berlin in 1995, made her theatre debut in 2002 at the Maxim Gorki Theater as young Polly in "Die Dreigroschenoper" and first appeared on screen in 2005 - alongside Katharina Thalbach and Götz George in "Maria an Callas". She narrates audiobooks, gives readings, and is the voice and face of the podcast "Echt krank!".
