Die Faunin - Interpretation and Analysis of the Symphonic Poem — Altes Rathaus Laufen, Laufen

Die Faunin tells the story of a woman, a mythical creature who, like a faun, lives alone in the forest and yearns for companionship. The work spans from adolescence to old age. Composed in five parts, it follows the structure of a Baroque suite in the old style, yet incorporates modern compositional elements that emotionally accompany and intensify the text. Each part is grounded in a philosophical idea.

The overture introduces the Faunin with her longings, sorrow, and anger. The Allemande reveals the unbridled vitality of the woman in the Faunin's song. The bustling activity of reapers at the forest's edge promises her romantic happiness in the Courante. The Faunin's erotic dream is reflected in the Sarabande. The Gigue, lively and virtuosic, leads us into the majesty of nature and the greater whole.
The five parts are framed by a Baroque suite in D minor by Bavarian composer Hieronymus Kradenthaller (1637-1700).

The texts are read aloud while the Letizia String Quartet performs the music. Twelve paintings accompany the piece, illustrating each station.
