Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, String Quartet in F minor, Op. 60
Franz Schubert, String Quartet in D minor, D810 "Death and the Maiden"

Two towering works of chamber music, both fitting for autumn in their preoccupation with death and transience. Mendelssohn wrote his final quartet in the wake of his sister's sudden death; Schubert's quartet revolves around a song set to a text by Matthias Claudius. Drama and consolation shape the emotional arc of the afternoon.
