Ambrose Akinmusire Quartet [21:30]

Trumpeter and composer Ambrose Akinmusire has spent 15 years navigating both the centre and the margins of the jazz scene - recently exploring classical music and hip-hop as well. Born in Oakland and early recognized by saxophonist Steve Coleman, he honed his craft at Manhattan School of Music and University of Southern California under Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. In 2007 he won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.

His latest album, Honey From a Winter Stone (January 17, 2025), was created in collaboration with vocalist-improviser Kokayi, pianist Sam Harris, Chiquitamagic on synthesizers, drummer Justin Brown, and the Mivos string quartet. The album blends modern string textures, freestyle, and contemporary jazz.
