"Meczycho" is a comedy written by Juliusz Machulski specifically for Teatr Powszechny in Łódź – Poland's Comedy Centre. The premiere took place in June as the epilogue to this year's festival edition. The production is directed by Tomasz Karolak.
The plot focuses on a portrait of three generations: the catalyst for a clash of different visions and worldviews is a family gathering, during which eighteen-year-old Nela introduces her loved ones to Aleks – her partner. A football match provides the backdrop to the events. "This is my latest contemporary comedy of manners, featuring three generations. And naturally, each generation has a different approach to life," says Machulski.
The production addresses themes of xenophobia and homophobia, as well as negative emotions stemming from prejudice, stereotypes, and historical trauma. "I cannot recall a Polish theatrical work that attempts to heal historical trauma and xenophobic prejudice through comedy," says the author.
The production is presented at Pieter Smit, ul. Nowogrodzka 2B.
