STANISŁAW IGNACY WITKIEWICZ
MATKA
"I composed this monstrous drama of Pure Form, MATKA, in a railway carriage on my way to the Jaworskis near Warsaw. If I pull it off, it will be absolutely wonderful" - Witkacy wrote to his wife on 28 November 1924. Three weeks later the play was complete, but it had to wait another forty years for its premiere - until Jerzy Jarocki staged it at the Old Theatre.
A parody of the naturalistic theatre of Strindberg, Ibsen and Przybyszewski? An autobiographical portrait of an artist dependent on his mother's support? A philosophical treatise hidden beneath the guise of a domestic drama, or perhaps a narcotic vision of a neurotic megalomaniac? Pure Form - or pure fraud?
MATKA is a story of people condemned to intimacy - an intimacy that becomes monstrous and degenerates into its opposite. About bonds that are chains. About a family that sets us in motion at first, but ultimately devours us.
