Josephine Baker (1906-1975) was an American singer, dancer and actress who found her greatest fame in Paris during the 1920s and 1930s. Her performances at the Folies Bergère made her an international star. During World War II she worked with the French Resistance, and after the war she became a prominent civil rights activist.
