Kenny Garrett (born October 9, 1960, Detroit, Michigan) is an American alto saxophonist, composer, and bandleader widely regarded as one of the defining voices in post-bop jazz. He rose to prominence as a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra in 1978 and later spent five years as Miles Davis's saxophonist, a collaboration that shaped his musical identity. As a leader since 1985, he has released more than fifteen albums - from the Coltrane tribute Pursuance (1996) to the Afro-Latin-rooted Sounds from the Ancestors (2021) - and was named a 2023 NEA Jazz Master, the highest honor in American jazz.
