Modern English are a British post-punk and new wave band formed in Colchester, Essex, in 1979. They broke through with "I Melt with You" (1982), which reached #7 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and became one of the defining songs of the new wave era - later gaining fresh audiences through its placement in the film Valley Girl and the TV series Stranger Things. The band has released nine studio albums, most recently "1 2 3 4" in 2024, and continues to tour actively with their classic lineup of Robbie Grey, Gary McDowell, Mick Conroy and Stephen Walker.
Modern English joined Simple Minds and Soft Cell as support acts on a 24-date North American amphitheater tour running May-June 2025.
The band released their ninth studio album "1 2 3 4" on February 23, 2024, produced by Mario McNulty, known for his work with David Bowie and Lou Reed.
Modern English performed at the Totally Tubular Festival in 2024, with fans reporting strong live performances in Los Angeles and other US cities.
The band made a main stage appearance at the 2023 Cruel World Festival, reflecting renewed interest in their catalog.
