Surgeon is the alias of Anthony Child (born 1971), a Birmingham-based electronic musician and DJ who has been a central figure in UK techno since his debut on the Downwards label in 1994. His sound - hard, industrial-edged, yet rhythmically sophisticated - helped define the Birmingham techno scene alongside collaborator Karl O'Connor (Regis), with whom he also records as British Murder Boys. Over three decades he has released albums on Tresor and his own Dynamic Tension imprint, held a long-running residency at Birmingham's House of God, and shaped the sound of a generation of European techno producers.
Surgeon released Shell~Wave on Tresor (May 2, 2025), a nine-track album recorded in single takes using the Soma Lyra-8 synthesiser and Pulsar 23 drum machine.
Resident Advisor reviewed Shell~Wave, describing it as capturing synthesised energy with the improvisation of a free jazz musician.
British Murder Boys (Surgeon and Regis) released their debut full-length album Active Agents and House Boys on Downwards on June 14, 2024 - their first album of all-new material after over 20 years as a duo.
Surgeon was announced as a participant in panels and workshops at an event on August 31, 2025.
Surgeon discussed the creation of the Shell~Wave artwork with designer Jazz Szu-Ying Chen in a feature published in late December 2025.
