ODILIA - Miracles Happen for Those Who Believe

According to a 10th-century account, Odilia was born on the Hohenburg in the municipality of Obernai. She was the daughter of Duke Eticho and his wife Bereswinde and was born blind. For this reason, Eticho wanted to have her killed. Her mother saved her by placing the child in the monastery of Palma. The monastery, which later became known as Odilia's convent, was located in Baume-les-Dames on the Doubs. At age twelve, Odilia regained her sight after being baptized by Bishop Erhard of Regensburg.

Odilia's brother Hugo brought her to the Hohenburg against their father's wishes. The angry father struck Hugo so forcefully that he fell headfirst onto a stone and died instantly. Odilia had to flee the Hohenburg because she refused to accept her father's marriage plans for her. She found refuge in a rocky crevice near the present-day Chapel of St. Ottilia in Freiburg im Breisgau in the Musbach valley.

Her father was now convinced that Odilia was under God's protection and gave her the Hohenburg. Odilia founded a convent for women and became its first abbess. At the foot of the Odilienberg, she established a second monastery. Her tomb on the Odilienberg remains one of the most important pilgrimage sites in France.
