Our programme thrives on variety - three eras, three instrumental combinations, three distinctly different sound worlds. We begin with two string trios, both heard for the first time in our series: one of the earliest works for this ensemble by Luigi Boccherini, and the string trio by Jean Cras, a French naval officer. His inventive and colourful piece was composed in 1926 aboard a ship with a piano always at hand. The programme concludes with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's grand C Major quintet - for me one of the finest and most accomplished chamber music works, which must have been an important source of inspiration for Franz Schubert's celebrated C Major string quintet.
