Nosferatu - an Irony of Horror is a comedic adaptation of the silent film classic "Nosferatu - a Symphony of Horror". Director Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau made the film in 1921 based on Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula". Murnau not only adapted Stoker's literary source with authentic mysticism but also created an expressionist masterpiece of cinematography. Murnau would have gladly titled his film "Dracula", but Stoker's widow refused him the rights. So Murnau chose the title "Nosferatu", which means "the undead". Yet it was not mere fear of vampirism that Murnau wanted to portray in his film, but rather a nightmare of humanity itself: the fear of the incomprehensible and unbelievable. Nosferatu is a monstrous and yet strangely tragic figure, for he can neither live nor die and thus suffers from the torment of his own existence.
In the KIKERIKI THEATER production, the restless bloodsucker is paired with an old "carnival fool" in the role of a broker's assistant as his mad counterpart. This creates a play between horror and laughter, intelligence and simplicity, fear and naivety, life and death.
