Picture a sleepy village in the beautiful Badnerland. Nestled among rivers, meadows and rolling hills lies Muggenhofen. Far from any urban bustle, lively nightlife or hectic commotion, this little village has ticked along in quiet contentment for decades - day after day, year after year.

Then one day, the widely respected mayor of Muggenhofen is found murdered. A killing in Muggenhofen? And the mayor, of all people? Police inspector Gustav Heberlein is baffled. Armed with his typewriter and a packed lunch, he sets out to find the killer. Could the culprit be someone from within the tight-knit village community? An outsider who moved in? Or a long-time local? What does Eulalia Schreiblinger have to do with it all, and how deeply is she entangled in the schemes of the village council?
