3Cordes: Golden Times - Of Dreamers, Adventurers and Jesters

In this programme, the string trio 3Cordes traces a path from the Romantic era to the golden 1920s, touching on a wide range of musical genres and styles through the figures of dreamers, adventurers and jesters.

From the young Richard Strauss, who in his variations on a Bavarian folk song takes a wry, subtle aim at established musical forms, to Jean Cras - a composer who was also a rear admiral, sailing around the world and writing extraordinary pieces during one of those adventurous voyages. Framing this impressionistic, faintly exotic work are film scores by one of cinema's greatest magicians: Charlie Chaplin. As early as 1936, in his film "Modern Times", Chaplin captured the rush and restlessness of the world - into which, then as now, something as unexpected as love can wander in. Life is an adventure!
