Astor Piazzolla revolutionized tango. The influence of jazz on Nuevo Tango was at least as profound as Piazzolla's studies with composer Nadia Boulanger. In his second quintet, a young pianist once played who is not only a legitimate heir to Piazzolla but an innovator in his own right: Pablo Ziegler, born in 1944 in Buenos Aires, has absorbed the complex structures of Nuevo Tango so deeply that he transforms them into pure sensuality with apparent ease. He weaves together threads of tango tradition, jazz and contemporary music into a delicate fabric - transparent and impenetrable at once. As a composer he has developed a distinctive voice, and has worked with leading musicians and orchestras. But it is in the trio format that his refinement, elegance, wealth of ideas and technical command come through most fully: everything must align to create those magical, harmonious, melancholic moments.
