Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen is a former colliery and coking plant listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. Built in the 1920s and 1930s in a striking Bauhaus-influenced style, it was once the largest coal mine in the world. Today the sprawling site hosts museums, cultural events, concerts, and art exhibitions year-round.
