The Wedding
Teatr Lalki i Aktora "Kubuś" im. Stefana Karskiego w Kielcach, Kielce
The premiere of Stanisław Wyspiański's "The Wedding" directed by Krzysztof Szuster will take place on May 9, 2026 at 6:00 PM at the Puppet and Actor Theatre "Kubuś" in Kielce, as part of the Stage for Youth and Adults programme. The performance lasts 1.5 hours and is intended for viewers aged 14 and above.
This drama, written and first staged in 1901, draws on the authentic wedding of poet Lucjan Rydel with Jadwiga Mikołajczykówna from the Bronowice area near Kraków. It explores the confrontation between the intelligentsia and peasants, generational conflict, the role of art, and the stagnation and lack of will to fight for independence. This work has appeared on the puppet theatre stage only three times to date.
In the Kielce version, the nativity-inspired composition of the drama combines animation of large puppets with radio theatre and multimedia recordings. The scenography references Kraków's architecture and depicts the contrast between city and countryside, while the puppets bear a certain resemblance to the real characters from the Bronowice wedding. Alongside Kielce actors, the performance features guests from Kraków and Warsaw.
