What must you do to live in a fashionable neighbourhood? Will you furnish your apartment to suit yourself, or to impress your friends? How far are you willing to go to buy a good car? Which expenses do you hide, and which do you flaunt? What do you brag about on Facebook? Holidays? Furniture? Dinners at fine restaurants? A plot of land or an apartment at a resort? A doctor's visit without waiting in line? Social status and career advancement have always gone hand in hand, whether in the 1950s or the third decade of the 21st century. What can we control, and what happens beyond our influence? That has always been difficult to define. We deceive ourselves about our agency and independence, yet one or two decisions can trap us in a spiral of obligations. Today – to banks or family, once – to the party and people with "connections"…
