The Inseparables

Sabah and Romain grow up next door to each other - she a girl with Algerian roots, he a French boy. What begins as a deep childhood friendship develops over the years into an intense love story. Through flashbacks, the play tells from Romain's perspective the story of this "inseparable" bond: from the first kiss and shared childhood memories to the social and family conflicts that increasingly strain their relationship.
Fabrice Melquiot weaves together reality and memory, lightness and pain, seriousness and tender humour into a chamber play about love, origins, religion and prejudice - and about how people can be close to each other despite all their differences.
Melquiot is regarded as one of the most renowned contemporary French playwrights. After early success as an actor, he began writing in the late 1990s; his plays for children, young people and adults have won numerous awards and been translated into many languages. From 2012 to 2021 he directed the children's and youth theatre "Am Stram Gram" in Geneva. "The Inseparables" won the Grand Prix de Littérature dramatique Jeunesse and the German Children's Theatre Prize in autumn 2018.
