La Bohème - Opera
Parktheater Lahr, Germany
Libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, based on four scenes from Henri Murger's "Scènes de la vie de bohème". Music by Giacomo Puccini.
Against the cold Parisian winter air, a story unfolds about love, friendship, and the tension between youthful dreams and the sobering reality of an empty larder. Rodolfo meets his neighbour Mimì amid a circle of young artists who embrace life despite poverty - the two fall in love, part, and reconcile, as do Musetta and Marcello. Yet, like the fleeting glow of a winter evening by the fireplace, their shared future fades: Mimì is terminally ill.
Puccini translated the libretto's nostalgic tone into a richly indulgent score, full of lyrical duets and ensembles. With the finest orchestral colouring, he captures different social worlds and the exuberance of young love. The work brims with world-famous melodies - Rodolfo's "Che gelida manina" and Mimì's "Mi chiamano Mimì". Musetta's waltz sparkles with flirtatious joie de vivre. After the triumph of "La bohème", critics saw in Puccini the rightful successor to Giuseppe Verdi. "I know of no one who has described the Paris of around 1830 as well as Puccini in La bohème," wrote Claude Debussy.
