Early Romanticism (c. 1795-1835) placed feeling and expression at the centre of musical life. Carl Maria von Weber wrote his "Freischütz-Messe" in Dresden - a striking blend of chorus, soloists and a richly coloured orchestra, charged with operatic drama.
Luigi Cherubini, one of the defining figures of his era, composed his Requiem in C minor in 1816 in memory of Louis XVI. The work combines strict counterpoint with classical clarity while pointing unmistakably toward the Romantic age to come.
The Evangelische Oratorienchor der Pfalz brings tonal richness, precision and expressive depth to the programme. Joined by soloists and the Kammerphilharmonie Mannheim, the ensemble performs under the direction of Jochen Steuerwald.
