This programme celebrates transformation. In his "Marche écossaise", Debussy clothes a simple Scottish melody in shimmering colours and transforms it into a small orchestral poem. Britten discovers the French language in two ways: first at age 14 in the elegant "Quatre chansons françaises", later in the feverish, luminous soundscapes of "Les Illuminations". Finally, Elgar presents a musical parlour game: the "Enigma Variations" sketch the composer's friends in equally tender and humorous sound portraits. Yet behind it all lies a great mystery - a mysterious theme that never truly sounds.
