When the nights are at their longest and snowstorms sweep through the villages, a world of its own opens up: Rimsky-Korsakov's opera "Christmas Eve" takes us to a mythical Ukrainian village, where blacksmiths, witches, devils and singing villagers celebrate the season with enchanting kolyadki carols. The orchestral suite distils the opera's finest moments into vivid sound pictures - fairy-tale-like and wonderfully festive. Alongside them come holiday classics from Bach's "Christmas Oratorio" and Handel's "Messiah". The overture from Handel's "Music for the Royal Fireworks" opens the evening with grandeur, while Mendelssohn's "Lobgesang" and Bizet's "Agnus Dei" invite a moment of quiet reflection.
