GOD OF CARNAGE in Bavarian dialect by Yasmina Reza

The son of Alex and Annette Huber knocked out two front teeth from the son of Micha and Veronika Rey. So both couples decide to meet and settle things amicably. But that's easier said than done. What begins as a reconciliatory conversation over clafoutis and espresso escalates into a verbal battle where all masks of civilized society fall away.

With the Bavarian translation of the play (the only dialect version the author ever permitted), two theatrical cultures collide: contemporary spoken theatre meets folk theatre. GOD OF CARNAGE in Bavarian translation is the cunning illegitimate child of a liaison between these two cultures. The conversational comedy remains intact, but becomes French-Bavarian. The dialect is so precise and intelligent that the characters never approach the cliché of leather pants, but instead meet somewhere between Paris and Trostberg: Bavaria is Paris and Paris is Bavaria. It's partly reassuring and partly unsettling, but in any case it's a simple yet powerful statement. The usual Bavarian clichés about cosy tradition in leather pants don't get you far here. The subtlety, depth, and malice remain completely intact in the Bavarian translation. Yet the rawness of the Bavarian dialect gives the characters an effect that is hard to resist.
