Joy Kleinkunst: Lucy van Kuhl & Die Es-Chord-Band - Geschickt verpackt
Häge-Schmiede Wangen, Wangen im Allgäu, Germany
We live in an age where packaging seems more important than content: every ordinary chocolate bar becomes an exclusive taste experience through advertising, a janitor gets the title of facility manager instead of a raise, and love no longer arrives as Cupid's random arrow but is algorithmically matched through Tinder and Parship. German Heinz Günter dresses up in a striped shirt and beret during his holiday in France and wonders why, despite carrying a baguette under each arm, he is not mistaken for Jean Pierre… Packaging is not everything.
Lucy van Kuhl packages her insights in her fifth programme with remarkable cleverness: absurd observations are wrapped in gentle piano sounds, tiny remarks enlarged through a grand poetic magnifying glass, and the melancholy of a nursing home transforms through a cloak of fantasy into a rousing party for the over-80s. Delicate melancholy meets boisterous nonsense, classical piano meets boogie woogie, and if you think that doesn't harmonize - Lucy's exuberant fantasy is a bright shining ribbon that effortlessly holds it all together and - very cleverly packaged.
