AZ (born Anthony Cruz, March 9, 1972, Brooklyn, New York) is a Grammy-nominated East Coast rapper whose career spans more than three decades. He first caught wide attention with his guest verse on Nas's landmark debut Illmatic (1994) - the only featured emcee on that album - and followed up with his own debut Doe or Die (1995), which went gold and peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard 200. Known for dense multi-syllabic rhyme schemes and a cool, unhurried delivery, he remains one of the most respected lyricists of the New York golden era.
