Goran Bregović (born 22 March 1950 in Sarajevo) is a Bosnian composer, guitarist and songwriter who first rose to fame as the creative engine of Bijelo Dugme - the most popular rock band in SFR Yugoslavia, whose nine albums sold over 15 million copies. After the band dissolved in 1989, he turned to film music and forged a celebrated partnership with director Emir Kusturica, scoring Time of the Gypsies, Arizona Dream and Underground - the last of which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1995. Today he tours the world with his Wedding and Funeral Orchestra, a sprawling ensemble that weaves Balkan brass, Roma melodies, Bulgarian singers and rock into a single, unmistakable sound.
