Mike Oldfield (born 15 May 1953, Reading, England) is a British multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer whose 1973 debut album Tubular Bells - the very first release on Virgin Records - sold an estimated 15 million copies worldwide and became globally known through its use in the horror film The Exorcist. Across 25 studio albums he has moved freely between progressive rock, folk, classical, ambient and electronic music, with nine albums reaching the UK top ten. He retired from recording and live performance in 2023, though his music continues to be performed in authorised concert tours.
