Sinéad O'Connor (8 December 1966 - 26 July 2023) was an Irish singer, songwriter, and activist whose raw soprano and unflinching public voice made her one of the most distinctive artists of her generation. Her 1990 cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U" reached number one in 17 countries and was named Billboard's #1 World Single of the year. Across ten studio albums she moved freely between rock, gospel, traditional Irish music, and reggae, winning a Grammy in 1991 for Best Alternative Album with I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got. She died in London at 56 from complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma; a nearly-finished final album, No Veteran Dies Alone, remained unreleased at the time of her death.
