Notos Quartett marks the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven's death with his Piano Quartet in E-flat major op. 16. Clear in form, elegant in expression and shot through with serene optimism, the work already hints at the creative power of Beethoven's later output. A striking contrast comes from William Walton's rhythmically driven musical language - full of energy and tonal colour, very much a product of the 20th century.
The emotional heart of the programme is Robert Schumann's Piano Quartet in E-flat major op. 47. Schumann regarded Beethoven as his greatest model and a kindred spirit, and this particular work holds special significance: it was the very first piece the quartet played together after its founding in 2007, and it remains emblematic of their ensemble spirit.
Over 20 years, Notos Quartett has built a presence on leading concert stages and major festivals across Europe, Australia, the USA, China, Japan, South Africa and Southeast Asia. The ensemble has won six first prizes and numerous special awards at international competitions in the Netherlands, Italy, England and China.
